p1 understand the use of sound and music in gaming

Task 1 compare and contrast 

The two games I will be comparing are

The last of us: this was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla a well-known composer who’s no slouch who’s Latin American

Compare:

They both have been created by a professional composer

They both use blue ray DVD because the games have more memory so they music and graphics will be compressed

They both don’t use much Foley in there pieces of music

They’re both well-known artists and have featured in many things before

Both of the tracks use timbre however not much but the last of us uses more than dead heat does

Both of these composers will have been given a contract to sign as it will be a big game so Sony doesn’t want Gustavo walking out half way through the job so they will need/want to make them sign contracts

Both artists are well known for example Gustavo santaaolalla has also made sound tracks like can dry leaves help us and Barry Adamson has made Mr Eddy theme

Dead Heat

This is the little big planet dead heat wavelength I found it the same way on YouTube and downloaded it from YouTube downloaded this is legal


Contrast
As you can see the last of us music is much louder and the waves are varied however dead heat is more quiet and mostly the same sound with no main chorus.

The last of us gives off an A old spaghetti Weston film vibe because of the sound track which fits in very well, a scene in the last of us plays the Weston music where the main protagonists are on horseback and it appears that there is an old ranch behind them. The little big planet sound track is way more jolly and upbeat which is almost a complete atmosphere changer the last of us immerses you however dead heat is more of a fun theme and it will incise you in to play more.

As you can see by the wavelength it is a relative length.

You as the player can feel different emotions while playing these games and the music created adds to that tension and atmosphere and the two producers did this very well in there game.

Task 2 principles of sound production

Little big planet has less timbre that the last of us. The last of us uses an old Weston guitar theme to set the scene and you can hear it throughout the song, little big planet on the other hand doesn’t use as many instruments it is all man made sounds which do fit very well together.

   1.       Resident evil 4. Death sound
When you die in game it plays a dark spooky sound and if your companion you have to save dies Leon the protagonist says “oh no”….
2 2 .       Legend of Zelda when you open a chest and it plays a satisfying sound it is used in this game as symbolism, when you open a chest and you hear that sound you know you will be getting something new from the chest. The sound stays in your brain and is therefore a psychological sound
   3.       Wilhelm scream as seen in films and games
This scream is features in a lot of films and I mean a lot nearly every old film ever featured it and even newer films and even games. This sound is symbolised when someone is falling off an edge or being killed. Most people will have heard of the Wilhelm scream
   4.       Portal 1 and 2 sound effect when you shoot the portal gun you will hear this sound in game 1000 times at least and after playing the game if you hear that sound you will instantly remember it is from portal, this is a psychological print in your brain remembering this sound, a well thought feature in gaming by the developers half
   5.       Hit marker sound in most call of duty games personally I prefer modern warfare 1 and 2 when you shoot an enemy this sound will play again with the portal sound you will remember this sound as its original and memorable
   6.       Metal gear solid detection sound

Music in video games is very important without music or sound its hard to immerse yourself in, try playing a game that requires sound to create an atmosphere like resident evil 7, it just isnt played how its meant ot be, a horror game that requires sound to set the scene and put the player on edge cant produce that if you play without the sound. 
Below are a list of games and how they make me feel.

A    5 different Mood and atmosphere game sounds
Outlast: scary, intense, makes me feel on edge, ingrowses you in the gameplay wanting you to play on.  amazing atmosphere music:

Destiny: heroic, powerful, gives me Goosebumps. 

Fallout 4: Old time, powerful, intense sounds, gives you feelings for the game, makes you want to play more, the sound can go as far as to make you addicted to playing it. 

Assassin’s creed 2: one of my favourite sound tracks in a video game ever, make me feel emotional that new games can’t be as good as they used to be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iriiZOeInDg

Mini ninjas: a much underrated game one of my childhood favourites, Chinese instrumental music, warm inside, nostalgia


      B    Research (on-line) journals in the library:- music is very important in games as it sets the mood and atmosphere, some games rely on there music to intensify it or create a sad scene for example one of my games I listened to the sound effects of called Outlast is very dependent on sound as its a horror game and the whole point of the game is to scare you 

      C   What is waveform: the waves of audio available to human ears, showing the sound length, waveform means a graphical representation of the shape and form of a signal moving in a gaseous, liquid, or solid medium. For sound, the term describes a depiction of the pattern of sound pressure variation

       D   What is a Foley: a Foley artist is a job where you create sounds for a game but with real world things for example walking on gravel in the game you might need that real sound so you get someone called a Foley artist to recreate it in real life

 E   What is timbre: Medical Definition of timbre: the quality given to a sound by its overtones: as a: the resonance by which the ear recognizes and identifies a voiced speech sound the quality of tone distinctive of a particular singing voice or musical instrument.
