p1 understand the use of sound and music in gaming

Task 1 compare and contrast 

The two games I will be comparing are

The last of us: this was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla a well-known composer who’s no slouch who’s Latin American

Compare:

They both have been created by a professional composer

They both use blue ray DVD because the games have more memory so they music and graphics will be compressed

They both don’t use much Foley in there pieces of music

They’re both well-known artists and have featured in many things before

Both of the tracks use timbre however not much but the last of us uses more than dead heat does

Both of these composers will have been given a contract to sign as it will be a big game so Sony doesn’t want Gustavo walking out half way through the job so they will need/want to make them sign contracts

Both artists are well known for example Gustavo santaaolalla has also made sound tracks like can dry leaves help us and Barry Adamson has made Mr Eddy theme

Dead Heat

This is the little big planet dead heat wavelength I found it the same way on YouTube and downloaded it from YouTube downloaded this is legal

Contrast

As you can see the last of us music is much louder and the waves are varied however dead heat is more quiet and mostly the same sound with no main chorus.

The last of us gives off an A old spaghetti Weston film vibe because of the sound track which fits in very well, a scene in the last of us plays the Weston music where the main protagonists are on horseback and it appears that there is an old ranch behind them. The little big planet sound track is way more jolly and upbeat which is almost a complete atmosphere changer the last of us immerses you however dead heat is more of a fun theme and it will incise you in to play more.

As you can see by the wavelength it is a relative length.

You as the player can feel different emotions while playing these games and the music created adds to that tension and atmosphere and the two producers did this very well in there game.

Task 2 principles of sound production

Little big planet has less timbre that the last of us. The last of us uses an old Weston guitar theme to set the scene and you can hear it throughout the song, little big planet on the other hand doesn’t use as many instruments it is all man made sounds which do fit very well together.

2 2 .       Legend of Zelda when you open a chest and it plays a satisfying sound it is used in this game as symbolism, when you open a chest and you hear that sound you know you will be getting something new from the chest. The sound stays in your brain and is therefore a psychological sound

   3.       Wilhelm scream as seen in films and games

This scream is features in a lot of films and I mean a lot nearly every old film ever featured it and even newer films and even games. This sound is symbolised when someone is falling off an edge or being killed. Most people will have heard of the Wilhelm scream

   4.       Portal 1 and 2 sound effect when you shoot the portal gun you will hear this sound in game 1000 times at least and after playing the game if you hear that sound you will instantly remember it is from portal, this is a psychological print in your brain remembering this sound, a well thought feature in gaming by the developers half

   5.       Hit marker sound in most call of duty games personally I prefer modern warfare 1 and 2 when you shoot an enemy this sound will play again with the portal sound you will remember this sound as its original and memorable

Music in video games is very important without music or sound its hard to immerse yourself in, try playing a game that requires sound to create an atmosphere like resident evil 7, it just isnt played how its meant ot be, a horror game that requires sound to set the scene and put the player on edge cant produce that if you play without the sound.

      B    Research (on-line) journals in the library:- music is very important in games as it sets the mood and atmosphere, some games rely on there music to intensify it or create a sad scene for example one of my games I listened to the sound effects of called Outlast is very dependent on sound as its a horror game and the whole point of the game is to scare you 

      C   What is waveform: the waves of audio available to human ears, showing the sound length, waveform means a graphical representation of the shape and form of a signal moving in a gaseous, liquid, or solid medium. For sound, the term describes a depiction of the pattern of sound pressure variation

       D   What is a Foley: a Foley artist is a job where you create sounds for a game but with real world things for example walking on gravel in the game you might need that real sound so you get someone called a Foley artist to recreate it in real life

 E   What is timbre: Medical Definition of timbre: the quality given to a sound by its overtones: as a: the resonance by which the ear recognizes and identifies a voiced speech sound the quality of tone distinctive of a particular singing voice or musical instrument.

Storytelling 74 BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

Big trouble in little china cost 20 million to make and they made 12 million in the box office which 

Elements

Big trouble in little china is a film which was then made into a comic book in the year 2000's it was inspired by a cowboy film.

Main Characters:

Jack Burton: Jacks a truck driver and he cares for himself and Gracey. His main mission in the film is getting his truck back which was stolen from him, Jack is the main hero of the film or so he thinks but in the end of the film at a fight scene he falls on his back and gets knocked out by some concrete so he was pretty useless. Jack is seen as the main character as he defeated Lo pan by throwing a knife into his head and saying "its all about the reflexes" 

Lo pan: Lo pan is the main bad guy who has set out to capture maio yin and Gracey as they have green eyes and he is under a curse where he takes the form of an old man so he needs to marry a girl with green eyes and do a Ritual so he can be cured Lo pan is eventually killed off by jack who says one of his one liners from the start of the film "its all about the reflexes" Lo pan also is in control of the lords of death (a gang)

Wang: Wang is a stereotypical side kick to Jack as he is out shined and over looked throughout the whole film however he actually does most of the things for Jack for instance in the fight scene at the end he takes down One of the 3 gods and some of there minions. 

sub characters:

Mr Shen: Mr Shen or egg is a bus driver who can do magic spells and a believer of black magic, Hes a useful character as he starts the film off explaining Jack and Wang's situation also he gives Wang and Jack useful information so without him they wouldn't have been able to stop Lo pan

Thunder, rain and lightning are the 3 gods who work for Lo pan they make it there mission to stop Jack and Wang from getting to Lo pan and stopping him marrying Maio yin. Thunder died by committing suicide and blowing himself up lightning dies by being crushed by a statue during the escape of the hero's and rain dies during an over the top sword fight with Wang.

Gracey: Shes introduced at the airport and shown as the damsel in distress from the start. Jack sees her and approaches her trying to chat her up but gets denied then hey meet her again in china at eggs house before they go to rescue Maio Yin she gets captured multiple times during the film further more confirming shes the damsel in distress. 

maio yin: She is also introduced at the airport went Wang goes to meet her she gets captured by the lords of death as Lo pan needs her to for fill his ritual to turn back to his mortal self shes also the side damsel in distress. So Jack goes to save Gracey and Wang goes to save Maio yin 

Emotional themes:

Jack: he seems self centred and only cares for his own things as we later find out at the end of the film he only went through it all because of his truck how ever he cares for his friend Wang and gracey
Wang: he has came along on the journey because he owes jack $2000 because at the start of the film Wang loses a bet to jack he also cares for his loved one maio yin and sets out to save her making jack and Wang good characters together. Gracey is introduced and she doesn't admit it but she has feelings for Jack so it motivates him to save her which is shown in the film.

INTRO MIDDLE AND END

Intro: : Truck driver Jack Burton wins a bet with Wang and takes Wang to the airport to pick up Wang's missus Miao Yin A Chinese street gang, the Lords of Death, tries to kidnap another Chinese girl at the airport intending to sell her as a sex slave. Jack then goes over because he thinks she looks attractive. They take Maio Yin instead. Jack and Wang go in jacks truck and follow the lords of death into the Chinese alleyways they find some kind of funeral taking place that suddenly becomes a street fight suddenly the 3 gods come down from the sky and break up the fight by also fighting Jack tries to escape in his truck but runs over Lo Pan Jack exits his truck, but finds Lo Pan entirely unfazed and Wang takes Jack to his restaurant

Middle: They all make an idea to infiltrate the baddies hideout, but are quickly subdued by Rain. After being tied up and beaten by Thunder, the two meet Lo pan. Wang tells Jack that Lo Pan needs a special green-eyed girl to break an ancient curse, and he intends to sacrifice Miao Yin. Lo Pan notes that Gracie has green eyes, too.  Lo Pan notes that Gracie has green eyes, too. lo pan sacrifices gracey and has maio yin his wife  As they all escape from the hideout Gracey gets taken by some monster thing as she runs to the exit.

 End: Wang and Jack regroup and head towards the bad guys headquarters. Egg gave all of the Chinese warriors a potion that makes them all feel invincible. When they get to the bottom of the elevator they invade lo pans wedding to stop them Jack decided to shoot the ceiling and knocks himself. Wang fights with Rain in an intense sword duel, then jack goes to chase Lo Pan. A bit fight breaks out and jack skilfully throws a knife into lo pans forehead. Then comically thunder grows very fat and explodes. They all escape and live happily ever after but before they all go jack turns down Gracey which confirms jack was actually just doing it for his truck the whole time.

• G1.MP main character of my game:

This is my main character in my game I used piskel to create him as a 2D model I’m making a shooter game where you play as G1.MP and go around saving his robot friends from being scraped   

This is the outline I used to create G1.MP

This is one of the many weapons available for G1.MP and his friend to use in battle he has built in guns on his arms but he can still pick up other weapons as a boost I also used piskel to create this weapon 

This is how my character’s will get around by default they will run around with their legs however you can pick up a jet pack to get a speed boost also made in piskel

This is a health item that you pick up throughout the world that will give you one life left the life will be shown by 5 gears in the top left of the screen (the heads up display, HUD) 

This is a gear which will be the health displayed on the HUD on most games the players have hearts as life but for this because you’re a robot it’s a gear matching your robots colour scheme

GAME 1: Until dawn
GAME 2: Donkey Kong

comparisons:
today i am going to be talking and comparing two games of different genres, ill be using until dawn and Donkey Kong as my options i will be talking about there different art styles.

Artistic styles: Until dawn is a new game that has recently been realised it is a photo realistic game and uses 64 bit engine. The developers are supermassive games and they have used a very big file so it may have been compressed also they would have optimised the game for better usage.
Storage of images would be used and compressed into separate folders and they would have been named appropriately for easy locating in such a big game. On the other hand ill be talking about donkey kong which is a classic example of a 8bit game which means it can be ran on pretty much anything, a phone, a 8bit console or something different like an atari, Donkey kong uses a pixel art style and uses sprites. DK is a platforming game which uses things like background graphics, concept art and pixel art. Where as Until Dawn uses things like photo realism concept art but the world you play in has been generated.

File Extensions

a file extension is a string of characters attached to a filename, usually comes along with a full stop and some kind of indication of the file format. The use of the characters vary from which type of file you're trying to extend The letters indicate what kind of application created it. There are many common file extensions. For example:

Compression

its a file that has been compressed down to use fewer bits of information than the original data file. Compression is often used to speed up the download of data such as visual or text images

image compressing is important if you're trying to fit an image somewhere like if an image file is 30MB but you're trying to upload the image where the maximum file size for an image is 25MB in this situation you would get your file and COMPRESS it to fit the requirements also compressing an image is very useful because it keeps the quality of the image even though it is being shrunk for example look at the image below

image capture

image capturing is the process of getting an image from a vision sensor, such as a camera or phone camera.  Usually this entails a hardware interface known as a frame grabber, which captures single frames. Image capturing off of a screen is often gotten with software available on the PC itself for example I use OBS studios which is a software which is really easy to use and its free it simply captures your screen and what you're doing for example if i wanted to record my screen or game for youtube i would use OBS studios.

Image capturing can be captured by using a digital camera or a photo copy machine

A programming term.

This effort of making software run as efficiently as possible is called 'optimisation'. Optimisation means to make maximum use of the resources available.

Programming is a mixture of art and science. The science bit is sticking to the correct syntax and programming rules, the art bit is finding creative ways of undertaking a programming task in the most efficient way possible.

For example, many graphic cards have hardware features built-in that makes rendering an image very fast. But the software running on the card has to coded specifically to take advantage of those features, otherwise the code will be 'sub-optimal' with inferior performance. Basically to change the settings of something to make the graphics better or worse depending on the situation

Most data needs to be kept for some time and so there is a need to have some method of doing this. This is called storage

Data which has been stored can be used at a later date. It is very important to name the file or location where the image is kept something sensible for example if it is a bush that is used on the first level you would call it "bush level 1" or level 1 bush" not just something blunt like "bush" this small thing can help lots of people that are trying to find things easily 

Storage can include data that has been inputted, required during a process or the results of processing.
