Level 3 Games Design Unit 78 Digital Graphics For Games

Computer games graphics
Pixel Art
pixel art is a form of digital art created with raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old  computer, console and mobile games mostly use pixel art. In college and schools they'll have a program called paint or coral draw which is commonly used to create pixel art (sprites).

A lot of the big games from back in the day and the beginning of gaming used pixel art and some still do, a classic is Pokemon.

Concept Art
concept art is an illustration used to convey an idea used in games they're also used in films so this is obviously a highly graphical art style, concept art can look like the real world which is why it is a great art style for me an example of a game that highly uses concept art is Guild Wars 2, Concept art is also referred to as visual development and/or concept design.

Texture Art
texture art is distinguished by its perceived visual and physical properties. It is the surface quality of a work of art and it is an element of two and three dimensional designs. Texture art is used commonly with real world surfaces such as wood or metal to create a good design like this image

Background Art
Back ground graphics/ art is seen in the back of games places that fill in the blanks such as on super Mario the world is 2D so you need to have a back ground texture too fill in the area as if it wasn't there would just be a white screen. it also brightens up the game (or darkens it and brings it to life) and sets the mood so a good background art from a game will be able to tell the user what type of game it is from the get go

In Game Interface
In Game interface is very important in games because its what shows you what you have on your HUD such as your level, health, Xp, map and all that stuff that is needed in games without it it would be very bare and you wouldn't know all the information about your character. obviously every game has a different way of showing you your interface my favourite is probably Fallout 3, new Vegas and 4 because you have a system on your arm called a pip-boy 3000 and you look at it like a watch on your wrist but it tells you all of your personal information such as Character status and health.

Print media Art
print media art is basically the cover and art style of your game, every game ever that has a case will have print media art it is like how the game is shown and displayed like on borderlands they have the case which is very eye catching and makes you want to pick it up and buy it also the merchandise like posters, or T-shirts

types of digital graphic software:

Raster graphics:
In computer graphics, a raster graphics image is a dot matrix data structure, representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of colour, view able via a monitor, paper, or other display medium. Raster images are stored in image files with varying formats. Raster images are often (gif, tiff, jpg) images.

Vector graphics:
Vector graphics is the creation of digital images through a sequence of commands or mathematical statements that place lines and shapes in a given two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. In physics, a vector is a representation of both a quantity and a direction at the same time. Vector images can be enlarged to 1,000,000 and still wont be pixelated
